Efficient way to remove mirror silver & leave clear glass?

A customer of mine wants to remove silver from a mirror in order to paint-in details from the back. Is there an efficient way to do this? I faintly remember hearing something about a "silver etch", but didn't find anything with a net search. Sandblasting won't work - he needs a non-fuzzy surface so the painted-on details will be clear. Any ideas? Thanks.

anybody willing to discuss laying down kiln wash on stainless?
I'm having problems with laying it down without streaks and building
it up evenly and the alumina is doing its best to sink out of the mix.

perhaps I should be happy with a thin film and reapply often?

hey everyone,

i want to make those hanging suncatchers...not stained glass but plain glass that i can paint and then hang in a window. i want to make a lot of them, to sell. where can i get glass that is already cut in rectangles and ovals? bulk? i've looked all over the internet and can only find prepatterned glass or huge sheets of glass, or glass squares for cutting into stained glass....but i don;t have a glass cutter, nor do i know how to use one. i'm not really interested in learning anyway....i just want to paint :)

Ancient Egyptian Glassmaking Recreated

[Photo caption: The reconstructed kiln built by Dr. Paul Nicholson of Cardiff University and Dr. Caroline Jackson of Sheffield University. (Credit: Cardiff University). View photo and original article at http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/12/071214094026.htm ]

ScienceDaily (Dec. 21, 2007) — A team led by a Cardiff University archaeologist has reconstructed a 3,000-year-old glass furnace, showing that Ancient Egyptian glassmaking methods were much more advanced than previously thought.

Dr Paul Nicholson, of the University's School of History and Archaeology, is leader of an Egypt Exploration Society team working on the earliest fully excavated glassmaking site in the world. The site, at Amarna, on the banks of the Nile, dates back to the reign of Akhanaten (1352 - 1336 B.C.), just a few years before the rule of Tutankhamun.

It was previously thought that the Ancient Egyptians may have imported their glass from the Near East at around this time. However, the excavation team believes the evidence from Amarna shows they were making it themselves, possibly in a single stage operation. Dr Nicholson and his colleague Dr Caroline Jackson of Sheffield University demonstrated this was possible, using local sand to produce a glass ingot from their own experimental reconstruction of a furnace near the site.

The team have also discovered that the glassworks was part of an industrial complex which involved a number of other high temperature manufacturing processes. The site also contained a potter's workshop and facilities for making blue pigment and faience - a material used in amulets and architectural inlays. The site was near one of the main temples at Amarna and may have been used to produce materials in state buildings.

Dr Nicholson, who has been working at Amarna since 1983, said: "It has been argued that the Egyptians imported their glass and worked it into the artefacts that have been discovered from this time. I believe there is now enough evidence to show that skilled craftsmen could make their own glass and were probably involved in a range of other manufacturing industries as well."

Dr Nicholson has now written a book detailing the discoveries made at Amarna. Entitled Brilliant Things for Akhenaten, it is published by the Egypt Exploration Society (London) and available through Oxbow Books in the UK and The David Brown Book Company in the USA.

polishing kiln fired glass

How do you get glass that has been fired to be shinny? I have 2 projects I created in my first glass class, one is a tile and the other is a small bowl. The top surface is very dull. My instructor recommended using Armour All (like for cars) but I don't think it gives it that smooth, sleek polished look. Any suggestions?

A) have a website you'd like visited (post the link here and I'll take a look!)
B) know of any particular glass websites that you like or admire (post the link here and I'll take a look!)

I'm considering EVERYTHING from features to user friendliness...I thought maybe some of you might have something good to share in this department.

I thank you in advance for any input you all might share...great minds thinking so paradoxically different yet alike....THANKS!

Looking for someone to make my art reality

Hi,

My name is Lacy Chenault, I am an artist form Indiana who is also a belly dancer. I was wondering if anyone would be interested in a collaborative effort to make my drawings into reality. You can find my art works here - http://home.earthlink.net/~lacychenault/artmain.htm
My favorite is the belly gallery

I have had many comments from people in the past asking if my drawings had been made into stained glass so they could buy them, so I am sure they would sell – we could even make them limited edition, I would promote them on my site, and would only ask for 12% of gross sales, and for my card (as well as yours) to be given to whoever purchased the costumes.

Please let me know if you are interested in this.

Need KILN advise for NOVICE glass artist

Hello!

I'm new at glass fusing, and have the creativity bug! Looking for a good, probably used kiln to get started with, but also something with enough versatility to grow into. I really love the large, clamshell type kilns (like Paragon Pearl-22), but can't afford one at this time. (+/- $2000) :-(

I feel like the fusing intro. class I took a while back gave me a good "basics", and now I'd like to jump feet first into experimenting and growing those basics...

Initially, I'm mainly focusing on smaller jewelry, but before long I know I'll want to increase my skills with larger projects. I may want to play with metals too. I guess I just don't want to limit myself too much, even in the beginning, if I can help it.

Features I'm looking for / questions I have:

* Kiln for glass fusing/slumping, but possibly also metals; any special brand/model suggestions?

* Digital timer/ programmer/need-to-sleep-aid (I won't last long if I have to baby-sit the kiln) & range of programmable options?

* Ample cubic feet space for small, but also larger projects? (I have a large, basement hobby room, so kiln size can be fairly flexible)

* Clay & Glass kiln, vs. Glass only kiln?

*USED vs. NEW: To buy or not to buy? What to watch out for? What's a good deal? (that money thing... )

* Do you know anyone who's selling a used kiln that would work for me?

* Anyone have a good glass workshop start-up layout/plan to share?

* Which questions SHOULD I have asked, but didn't yet ????????????????????????????????????

Any advise is very much appreciated.

Thanks,

eyefleye / Lisa

Are there any others that are interested in sharing a studio in SF? I have a studio, all my own equipment, but it's WAY out in the east bay due to being a poor student. If I found a few others who wanted to have a space in san francisco, maybe we could join forces and set up a small shop here in this great city. Anyone interested?

Sandblasting Glass (a mirror) around Boston

I'm looking for someone that might be able to sandblast the back of a mirror for me. My needs are quire specific, I want to remove the mirror coating to a specific and fairly small pattern on a small mirror. I will have a mask ready for this, what I don't know is if it is feasible to remove the mirror backing in this way and leave clear glass. Any suggestions would be most welcome, mailing my piece elsewhere is also an option as it is pretty small.

Any comments welcome!

I purchased a bottle cutter l while ago and cut a bunch of wine bottles to make some drinking glasses. That all went fine and now I have about 2 dozen cut. But I'm finding the hand grinding of the edges to be extremely tedious (the bottle cutter kit suggested using grit in the bottom of a pie pan and work up through the 3 various sizes of grit until finishing with fine sandpaper). Has anyone used a mechanical glass grinder on bottles? I'm wondering if I should go ahead and get one, but I'm worried that it may not work well with the curved edges.

Hey all. im a senior at college park highschool in plesant hill, ca(east bay) my school is making the senior class do a project called senior experience. what we have to do is go out and experience something for at least 16 hours. heres where you can help me. i REALLY REALLY REALLY want to do lampworking for my experience. if you are a lampworker or know a lampworker that can help me please write back. the problem i have encountered in the past is no one wants to tell me anything unless i take their class. there is no way i can afford a real class. the project will only allow me to spend $20. so if you can help me learn how to do some cool techniques please write back. i have done beads on a hot head and i have a new nortel that i havn't used, so i do have some knowledge about working with hot glass.

thanks alot for reading

I got extremely lucky a few months back and met a really great glass blower locally who i now have started leanring from, I'm basically a shop bitch, I go and help them out and in exchange earn time at the bench. In the past 2 months I've already made everything from cups to a small vase to a paperweight, which amazingly he's allowed me to take home. It's really pretty awesome and I've never been so addicted to something so quickly. I did lampwork for about a year before this, but it doesn't even begin to compare to learning to actually blowglass. Has anyone else just started out blowing glass?? I'd love to hear other's expierences.

Putting the finishing touches on the gallery area, and am now looking for glass artists who do good work and are looking to display and sell their work on consignment. There will be a Grand Opening event in early January. Let me know if you or someone you know, would be interested. Thanks.

lots of stained glass... and questions

i'm new here... and new to glass working in general. so i've got two needs - to get rid of some stuff and also to get some stuff. any help and or suggestions are most wekcome!

i have:

i inherited from an aunt a ton of stained glass, lead (type) stuff and other supplies.

i'm not into this kind of glass art, but have found i LOVE flameworking... so what can i do with all this stuff? does anyone trade this?

i also have a ceramics kiln thats hardly used (maybe twice) with a lot of supplies (shelves, cones etc).

i need:

i'm looking to set up a couple of tanks a torch and kiln and get started on flameworking - but would want to do this outside of my house. i took a class at the cruicible and will probably do another before jumping in with both feet. but my schedule is so erratic that scheduling lab time is nearly impossible to do.

of course an annealing kiln is different from the one i have for ceramics.

again... any offers, suggestions or help is so appreciated!

Can anyone tell me if they know of the dangers/health risks of being a stained glass artist? I'm concerned about my exposure to lead.. how dangerous is working with lead came, and solder containing lead? I've recently purchased lead free solder and flux to use on my "copper foil" projects (havent tried it yet, so I dont know how good its gonna work) also.. does anyone know how "exposed" one really is, with a leaded glass piece hanging in their home? I suppose one would have to eat it or something in order to pose any dangers, right? I guess I should have thought of this before getting addicted to playing with glass.. lol

I'm looking for a place to blow glass once in awhile. I have a really busy schedule with school and my job but I miss blowing glass so much. I have my own torch and tools. I have a kiln too but it is the huge double door Aim front loader. I have tons of experience and would gladly teach in trade for occasional space. I mostly make pipes and beads and other random stuff. Peace.

Recycled Glass Countertop

Recently I saw a countertop made out of recycled glass, tempered glass if I remember correctly. On a home improvement show called "Moving Up" on TLC.

I tried to research it but the only thing I came up with is a company who puts glass into concrete.... not exactly what I had in mind. This glass countertop had a translucent quality to it. As if a custom sand casting had been done or something to that effect.

Does anyone know anything about the countertops and who makes them? I am trying to build a nice eco house and originally I was going to go w/stainless steel, but recycled glass would be 100 times better.

Thanx in advance to anyone who can help me out!

Pyrex glass waste

I am almost ashamed to post this after being a glass artist for so many years, but it is true. I never figured out the proper way to get rid of pyrex glass waste. I've tried to put it in the recycling only to get my housemates pissed at me for doing so (evidently it doesn't go there). I've kept it for long periods of time hoping to figure it out eventually, only to throw it in the trash upon a move or major cleaning. It always seemed like something I'd figure out eventually, but never did.

I'm getting tired of not knowing the PC way to deal with this. Trust me -it IS waste(little knots of air-bubbly nasty mess that cannot be reused), so I'm probably not going to be agreeing with the "use it til it's gone" idea.

I live in California, so there has got to be a proper way to deal with this without pissing environmentalists off and also weighing on my own conscience.

What do you guys do?

Looking for Instructor

HI!

I have always admired glass art but only recently attended an informal class on glass beads (historical perspective) and would love to learn how to create glass beads. Unfortunately, my artistic experience/training is more in the area of painting, drawing and photography. A local university (Virginia Commonwealth University) has an excellent art department, including a jewelry program, but I work a full time job and cannot attend daytime classes.

Is there anyone in this tribe in the Richmond VA area who knows of or is an instructor in glass arts that teaches outside the 9-5 schedule?

I torched myself the other day while glass blowing. Like to the 3rd degree. As much as that sucked I have to say that I did enjoy the look on peoples faces when they would ask how I had burned myself and I would reply "Glass blowing darling." They always looked confused and would ask me to repeat it.
I know getting burned is no fun but once the pain goes away it can be a lot of fun messing with people. I guess that there is an upside to everything even if it is a small one.

I am on the hunt for cutlery blanks...you know, like cheese knives and spreaders...appetizer forks and such. I have a good idea that is going to sell like firecrackers, but can't find anyone in the US who sells these kinds of blanks.

here's an idea of what i am speaking about:

would any of y'all know of anything? or maybe you (or someone you know) works in the metal arts?

i'll take any and all leads. and may i thank you in advance? why, THANK YOU!!!

I would like to see if there is any need or interest in this community for the hourly rental of a 4' x 2' x 3' blast cabinet that would be exclusively for glass work only.
If there is not I will dedicate it to removing shell from a metal casting process.

Thanks for your time,

Photographing glass

Hi there,

How do those of you with things that are mostly clear glass photograph them?

I have been trying to take pix of some of my stuff, and I do a semi-passable job with the colored pieces, but I'm having a terrible time lighting the clear ones. I've tried some different light positions and black and grey backgrounds, but they all still look amateurish to me. (Well, okay, I _am_ an amateur, so I guess they should, but still...)

Thanks for any suggestions!

Hi ya'll. I'm new. :-) And it just so happens that I've got issues with my bead release. I've tried so many different recipes and so far nothing is working for me...I wonder if it all stems from the kiln wash I started with?

At any rate, I've mixed up a concoction of kiln wash, alumina silicate, and water. When that didn't work, I added some baby powder (closest I had to talc). Still doesn't work. I'm not feeling too confident about the kiln wash I started with, and I understand this little concoction is common so I don't understand why its not working out for me.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks!

Artists/Designers Wanted

Hi everyone, I'm new to this tribe. I am looking to make connections with artists and fashion designers of all types who are already in business for themselves (with their own customers), and can provide samples for us to market with.

We are (quietly) starting the launch of Creative Endeavors Consulting Partners, which has been in development for seven years by Creative Endeavors Consulting Company. Our mission statement:

Creative Endeavors Consulting Partners is comprised of entrepreneurial-minded individuals and partner companies with the vision, problem solving, and experienced leadership ability needed to bring together the worlds of creative and business.

We are looking to form Alliances with artists in various mediums. Their creativity and ours will be utilized in the development of projects and product lines. The type of people we are looking for are clothing and jewelry designers, painters, sculptures, fashion illustrators, entertainers (for special events), photographers (for photo shoots), etc. Right now I am only interested in people/companies in California to ease into things. Later we will expand our search nationwide.

Please understand this is *not* a situation where we take whatever the artist has made and go look for markets to sell it to. We are creating markets, and inviting artists that have aligned with us into deals. Please also understand that we do not want to be the artist's primary form of income, which is why we want to work with already established businesses.

For consideration, please send an email to rp@cecpartners.com with the subject "Artist Search: [fill in what you do]." In the email, please provide your contact info (location!), company info, a website link, bio, and anything you can think of that would help us to decide whether we could work with you.

Lastly, please understand if I can't respond immediately. We know there is a tremendous need in the market for artist representation. I am opening the door just a crack on Tribe to see who is out there. We will be working as fast as we can to sort through emails and get back to people, but it will take some time to get things rolling. Even if we can't use your particular talent right away, we will keep you on file for future consideration, if it makes sense for our needs.

Regards,
Rebekah

Fusing/Slumping

So! I have found myself in this strange new predicament in my life! I not going to go into the long drawn out sordid and quite interesting tale, but I am going to ask some glass questions!

I have blown hot glass, yet have never entered into the realm of the kiln! I am excited to do so and am eager as well! I have primed and fired my shelves and am ready to fuse in the morning!

What would anyone recommend to a first time fuser? Would you recommend molds for slumping? Are there any tried and true 'recipies' that someone has, handy, just sitting there?

I have ordered the Fusing Book One, but it won't arrive until next week...at the earliest. Time is of the essence and I don't have much to waste...so I'm going to be jumping in, no matter what.

I just would hate to have to re-invent the wheel....and well....I know you all just want to take me under your wing and turn me on to some know how!

I just wanted to say howdy to everyone. I'm an artist by heart an art director by trade ( themountain.com ) and just started designing and producing my own stained glass work. I want to get into blowing soon, as soon as I can set up a little zone in my workshop. Anyhow, I added a pic of my second design to the gallery, when I get a good pic of my first piece "Celtic Tree" I'll post it as well. I'm trying to only do original stained glass works and push the level with each one.

Have a great day everyone.

I just wanted to say that I created a NEW TRIBE for local small-scale artists (or art lovers) that would like to present there work (and or talk about it). I know there are many art tribes already, but many of them are huge and difficult to get noticed (or a say in). This tribe welcomes any form of art (poetry and music are all encouraged).

come show your talent for free

At:

Poor Man's Art Show
poormansartshow.tribe.net (you know the drill)

Hope to see you there!!!!!

Glasswork in the SF Bay area

Hi All -

I've been blowing and selling my work in the Bay area for a couple of years now. I have taken classes and currently work at Public Glass and anyone interested in learning more about glass art should definitely check them out(www.publicglass.com). They offer a range of classes in glassblowing, slumping/fusing, casting, lampworking and soon possibly stained. You can almost always stop by and just watch people blowing glass in the hotshop, which is good fun and pretty amazing if you've never seen it. Be sure to call first to ensure the studio is open.

I've been part of the "glass community" at PG for a while and everyone is very cool and helpful. I've learned a ton just from talking to other glassblowers there.

I just wanted to let you all know of the link:

www.alaskaglassgallery.com

this is the gallery that the woman I blow glass for runs. She (Cynthia England) owns Alaska Glass Studio, where we work and you can check out some of the stuff we do by clicking on her name. There are a lot of other well known and talented artists represented by her gallery, though, not nearly enough.

Also-- I posted some of the work that I have had hand in, in the pictures on this tribe...enjoy!

P.S. Would be happy to hear any feedback, BTW!

the greatest glass glue on the market, BAR NONE!

my sister and i are both well respected mosaic artists. we have been doing mosaics since 94. well before you saw them in hobby lobbys wal marts, etc. .. we used to use frans brush stroke because it was the best on the market, however it dried too slow and often times not clear, depending on how much was
needed to adhere the glass...
so we decided t
o have our own glue produced
... now i will not say the process we went through, but we got what we wanted... our glue be used on fabrics metals concrete wood and of course glass... our glue dries 5 to 10 times faster than frans, dries much clearer and once it is dried it can be soaked in water infinately without releasing its hold.... meaning making bird baths and stepping stones with this glue is a good idea... anyway, we have our glue in a few small craft shops... if you would be interested in purchasing our glue you can contact me at anklecharm@yahoo.com... our glue is also priced the same as frans at $8 a bottle... we also do wholesale for businesses, and there is price breaks for half case(12) and full cases(24)...
we have had our work featured in newspapers magazines(country living) and a movie (world without waves) look a tmy pictures if you would like to see a sample of our work....

Great demo by Brian Hirst

I attended the Brian Hirst demo at BAGI on Thursday evening and it was quite spectacular. He uses a technique which combines casting and blowing and made a bowl similar to some of his other work.

The piece he blew had to be the heaviest I've ever seen someone do in person. It took six gathers on a one inch pipe. After heating his last gather in the glory hole, he took it out and wrestled it over to a pot he'd made a sand mold in to form the bottom and legs of the bowl. He put the floppy glass into the mold and blew out the bowl. Watching he and his crew handling such a big piece (weight wise) was very impressive.

I'll post a picture of the piece when it comes out of the annealer.

Hi all,

I started this tribe because I couldn't quite believe there wasn't one already! I'm not so much the organizer type, but I figured I'd get the ball rolling, so come on in and introduce yourself... What kind of glass art do you do? How long have you been at it? Feel free to wax poetic about anything and everything.

Also, go ahead and post your favorite pieces in the album (use the captions to say who you are). Post as many as you want. Can't wait to see the eye candy.

OK, me, I'm Pam (obviously) and I do lampwork. Mostly beads, but I'm starting to get into some small blown pieces on the torch and other off-mandrel stuff. I've been obsessed with art glass for as long as I can remember. I tried mosaic and kaleidoscope-making before finding my passion - hot glass. I took a class in January 2003, set up a home studio in February, and haven't looked back. So far, this is nowhere near a career for me and I do have a regular job. But glass is my passion. I am happily addicted. Check out my stuff at http://www.pamarama.com/beads/ and I'll put some in the album too.

Now you...

HOT glass!

I am currently working as an assistant to a gaffer here in Alaska. I have been working with hot glass for almost 9 years. I LOVE IT!

We tend to do alot of what we call 'puff & spin'...basically freeforms. We do alot of functional art: bowls, vases, tumblers and such. I have tried my hand at lampworking, and at this point, I really prefer hot glass. There isn't much like pulling a really hot gather out of a 2100 degree furnace with another 300 pounds waiting to take form.

So, that's me -- well, kinda! Looking forward to meeting other lovers of the glass!
